Abstract

The fulfillment of the physical needs of pregnant women has consistently been the primary focus of the government as an intervention strategy to reduce maternal and child mortality rates, in line with the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly targets 3.1 and 3.2. In addition to physical aspects, there are two other aspects that also require attention as part of a comprehensive approach to addressing maternal and child health issues. These two aspects are the spirit and the soul. This study employed a literature review method using Walker & Avant’s conceptual analysis. The findings of this study highlight the need to address the fulfillment of the balance among the three structures of human personality from the perspectives of Islamic and Bugis psychology to reduce maternal and child mortality rates. The structures of human personality from the Islamic-Bugis psychology perspective consist of tau (spirit), rupa tau (physical), and tau-tau (psychic). The well-being of pregnant women can be fulfilled by meeting the needs of each structure of the human personality, namely tau (spirit), through strengthening closeness to Allah by engaging in dhikr, performing prayer, and reciting the Qur’an. Rupa tau (physical) is met through adequate nutrition, such as a diet rich in carbohydrates and fats as energy sources, and essential nutrients including iron, calcium, vitamins, minerals, and energy. Tau-tau (psychological) is addressed by managing emotions and reducing stress and anxiety levels.
